Meeting and Bowling Social, Friday 30th June

Last months meeting was followed by a social visit to the Bowlplex at Broadway Plaza. The pictures say it all…

Go Ape

The BYMP and guests spent 3 hours on a glorious sunny day hugging trees! Not because we are pro-active environmentalists…but because we were one of the first ever teams to Go Ape at the new course in Cannock Chase forest. There were 90m high zip lines, rope walks, tunnels and swings and we all made it through without injury (well most did).

BYMP Kitted Out for the Forrest
The BYMP would like to thank Kan Ni for organising a fantastic event which was thoroughly enjoyed by all 10 participants.

First Annual Midlands Awards Ceremony, Wednesday 5th March 2008

The evening reception was organised on behalf of the Midlands Region to recognise the newly elected status of Corporate Members and Fellows in the Region.  Ben Truman and Adam Merchant attended the event representing the Birmingham Young Members Panel.

The event started with a drinks reception at the National Motorcycle Museum, and there was the opportunity for attendees to tour the museum’s extensive collection of classic motorcycles.  A buffet dinner was then served before the guests sat down to be greeted by David Greenway, Worcester Area Chairman, who gave a lively welcome speech covering the IMechE’s current events and the purpose of the evening.

As each of the newly elected Members and Fellows were photographed with Mr. Greenway receiving their certificate, whilst IMechE’s Engineering Director, Colin Brown, gave a running commentary on their background, including education and career history.

The evening was a great success enjoyed by all the guests.

Meeting & Jam House Social 28th March 2008

This month’s meeting was followed by a pub meal at The Old Joint Stock.  The evening culminated in crazy dancing at Jools Holland’s live music club, the Jam House.

Unpuzzled Accounting 21st February 2008

Engineers and Accountants rarely see eye to eye and each one often confuses the other when they get together.  Well, now Engineers in the Midlands have a new tool up their sleeves to help them understand and work much more efficiently with financers.  This was the aim of a recent innovative workshop organised by the Birmingham Young Members Panel (BYMP) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers entitled ‘Unpuzzled Accounting!”

Unpuzzled Accounting! provided a revolutionary approach to finance and accounting, focusing on a logical and effective way of understanding and managing modern accounts and data.  The new techniques learnt during the workshops are not available in current textbooks making it even more special to attend.  With over 60 people attending 2 sessions from many professions and age groups, feedback from the event was in summary, FANTASTIC!

Routes to Registration 29th January 2008

Dennis Beard Soft Skills Lectures

Over the past 12 months the BYMP have been working hard to forge ever stronger links with the Institutions of Civil, Structural and Engineering Technology. These relationships have grown most notably during the recent commencement of the joint Dennis Beard Soft Skills Lecture Series, which have been held on a bimonthly basis since October 2007.

The talks are relevant to members from all Institutions and audiences continue to grow with each event. There are still remaining talks in the series which cover inter-personal skills, customer care, marketing, sales, product development, and project and business management.

Mr. Beard delivers his talks with energy and genuine enthusiasm that grips everyone in the room from start to finish. The talks are highly informative and bursting with comprehensive “Do’s and Don’ts” and amusing anecdotes from over 30 years experience as an Engineering Apprentice, Company Director, University Academic and Business Consultant. These make it easy to remember and implement key messages from each talk; ensuring everyone takes something away to use in their working and even personal lives.
