As a car travels on the road, noise is generated from a number of sources, including the wheels, engine and through the air flowing around it. At higher speeds, such as those experienced on a motorway, wind noise tends to dominate the overall noise heard by passengers within a vehicle. The reduction of aerodynamic noise is desirable to vehicle manufacturers, since high levels of noise can lead to driver fatigue and reduction in concentration as well as affecting the perceived quality of a vehicle.
Car manufacturers commonly use wind tunnels to predict the level of wind-generated cabin noise during a vehicle's development. There is a significant difference between the smooth flow conditions experienced in a wind tunnel and the turbulent conditions on road, so can the cabin noise experienced by a driver on road be accurately predicted? Research currently being undertaken at Durham University aims to answer this question.
This presentation explores the methods used by car manufacturers in assessing wind noise and gives an overview of the research carried out at Durham in comparing the turbulent environment and cabin noise in both the wind tunnel and on road.
16 March 2010 - 17 March 2010 | 09:00 - 16:30
Introduction:
The seminar will highlight some of the problems associated with the design, selection, assembly and maintenance of bolted flanged joints in pressure systems; providing information on developments in gasket technology, and the recent developments in EN 1591 for design procedures.
Consideration of the important issues in the assembly of bolted joints and the main methods of controlled tightening will be addressed, and common errors in both assembly and tightening will be highlighted.
Case studies and discussion sessions will be included, to provide an insight into the operations side, including emissions legislation, leak management, investigation and record management.
Benefits of attendance:
• Learn about the latest advances in European and American flange design methods
• Examine developments in standards, gasket materials, bolt tightening technology and the qualification of personnel competency
• Study the failure mechanisms for bolted flanged joints
• Appreciate the problems associated with the management of the integrity of bolted joints
• Increase awareness of the requirements of emissions legislation, leak management and investigation and record management
• Avoid problems caused by selection of inappropriate flange type, gasket material or bolting
• Adopt a good-practice management system for bolted joints
• Improve the training and competency of personnel
Who should attend?
• Engineers with an interest in pressure systems
• Specialists involved in the prevention of onshore pipeline failures, the Pipelines Safety Regulations and the role of UKOPA
• Users and operators of pressure equipment which incorporates bolted flanged joints
• Those involved in health and safety and environmental issues relating to pressure equipment
• Engineers working in process, petrochemical, power generation, oil and gas, in addition to onshore designers, inspection engineers and managers
17 March 2010 | 17:30 - 19:30
This event is one hour session explaining the various routes to professional accreditation in IMechE. Individual’s question would be answered at the end of the presentation. Attendees would leave understanding the process and the benefits of becoming CEng/IEng/EngTech.
