About Us

Welcome to the Tyne and Wear Young Members Panel - the most active panel in the North East

We have recently updated our website to include all the latest information for this year’s upcoming activities. There are plenty of high profile events scheduled for this year including technical presentations by EADS Astrium, Shadow Robotics and Virgin Galactic as well as Aston Martin. The highly anticipated presentation from Virgin Galactic promises to be unmissable and the speaker from Aston Martin will be bringing along the new 5 door Aston Martin Rapide!

Our celebrated Christmas Dinner will be returning to the Copthorne Hotel on 5th December 2009. This venue proved to be a huge success for last year’s dinner providing a glamorous setting with easy access to central Newcastle. Further building on the success of the last 3 years, we decided to aim slightly higher for our Christmas festivities and so have included a Masquerade ball theme for this year’s dinner. As ever we aim to support a charity during the evening and this year’s raffle proceeds will be donated to ‘Help for Heroes’. Again growing on previous year’s success we aim to release 140 tickets for the evening. Further details for this event can be found on our e-program card.

Once you have a look at our program card you will probably realise how much work has gone into this years events. We have successfully recruited and retained several new members who, have been both influential and inspiring for the team and have brought with them new ideas and big plans!

I would like to welcome Hender Blewett to the panel who decided to join us after attending last years Christmas Dinner. Hender has not only helped source contacts but has also organised 2 of this years events - Shadow Robotics and Cosworth F1!

A very warm welcome is also offered to Alex Smith and Dave Goley. Alex has worked hard this year on all aspects of graphic design. It is fair to say that without his skills we would have not been able to deliver such an impressive e-program card or Christmas Dinner invites.

Dave is the event organiser for the Tidal Turbine presentation due to take place early next year, and I am sure he is keen to take on even more responsibility throughout the year.

Last, but by no means the least, John Farrer has jointed the panel. John has already taken responsibilities within the team and has helped organise EADS Astrium as well as sourcing the contacts for the Tidal Presentation.

Nevertheless, as new members have joined the team, others have decided to move on. Katie Austin, our publicity officer, has hung up her gloves after three years of hard work and passed her responsibilities over to Adam Douglas.

Gareth Ayre, now a Chartered Engineer, is handing over his treasurer responsibilities to Andrew Nevins who will assume his responsibilities after Christmas.

And finally, Simon Tooley is stepping down from his role of Secretary after being a valued member of the team for a number of years. Simon will be handing over to Mhairi Swann who will assume the responsibilities of Secretary with immediate effect with views on becoming the new Chairman by April 2010.

With regard to myself, I also intend to step down from the role of Chairman of the panel in April 2010. It has been a great privilege and honour to be the Young Members Chairman. The role has been a great challenge for me and I have thoroughly enjoyed it! I would like to thank all the panel members who without, our success would not have been possible. Finally I would like to say that although the panel has and will change over the coming months, our aim and vision remains the same. I have every confidence that the panel will continue to grow from strength to strength.

I look forward to meeting you at one of our events over the coming year.
