Welcome to the Scottish Region pages. These pages are used to provide you with information about the events organised throughout the Region by our enthusiastic committees in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Thurso.
Where possible, we try to align our events with the IMechE’s four key themes of Energy, Environment, Transport and Education. Please have a look at your Area pages to find out what’s planned locally. If there is a topic you are particularly interested in which is not covered, please let us know and we will endeavour to include it in our future programme of events. Also, if you have facilities which may be used as a venue for an event or suitable subject matter, please get in touch. We also arrange and participate in briefings at Holyrood throughout the year.
If you have a little time to spare and are interested in joining the Committees, please also get in touch. We need enthusiastic volunteers. It can be very interesting work, good for developing your skills and also provides some great networking opportunities.
We now have over 8,000 members in the Region. Each committee promotes their local events to the membership of that area using the IMechE’s list server. Please make sure that you keep your contact details up to date!
By joining IMechE you can enjoy the many benefits that membership brings. If you would like to have a membership presentation at your workplace, please contact our Business Development Manager Sandra Mulligan on s_mulligan@imeche.org.
We are currently making arrangements for our 2010 Annual Dinner which will take place in Glasgow in October. For further information and booking arrangements, please follow the link in the events diary below.
The Region is always looking to evolve, improve the things we do and have greater member engagement. We welcome your feedback and participation.
Dr. Alex Galloway, Honorary Secretary

The IMechE symposium will explore the latest developments from industry and academia in powder and particulate solids handling in a number of priority areas of research and innovation including storage and flow, characterisation, pneumatic conveying and mechanical handling.
The focus of the 3rd Bulk Solids Europe conference will be on energy. It is fascinating to realise that on the one hand energy is required to power bulk solids handling systems and that on the other hand bulk solids handling systems are required to supply the coal or biomass for power stations.
Bulk Solids Europe was last held in 2008 in Prague and succeeded in bridging the gap between academia and industry. Experts from all over Europe and even Asia, Australia and the USA met to discuss the latest trends in the bulk materials handling industry. The 3rd Bulk Solids Europe will repeat the success of 2008 and take it even further!
This is an international event for industrialists, researchers and academics in all sectors that handle, store and process powders and bulk materials, from pharmaceuticals and food through plastics, metals and chemicals to power and mining.
The IMechE Symposium on New Frontiers in Bulk Materials Handling is the third in a series of events beginning in 1991 with ‘BULK2000’, followed in 2000 with ‘From Powder to Bulk’. These events give all those involved in powder and bulk handling an opportunity to review the impact made by advances in science and technology to industrial practice and offer foresight into the latest trends and developments by academic and industrial researchers and innovators.
The IMechE Bulk Materials Handling Committee (BMHC) is delighted to work in partnership with Vogel to include the Symposium in the Bulk Solids Europe event in Glasgow and bring the benefits of both to a single audience in what promises to be one of the most important bulk solids handling events in the UK for many years.

Fluid machinery performance is critical for the transport of liquids and gases during extraction and processing of hydrocarbon products. Innovations in fluid machinery can be applied to achieve optimum availability and increased efficiency.
Advances in exploitation and process technology have led to increased pressure and temperature challenges for fluid machinery. Designers must also address the stringent limits on the weight and volume of production equipment. This congress showcases the latest technology and provides a forum for sharing valuable design and operating experiences.
In 2010 the congress will take on a slightly different format with 2 full days of technical papers and discussion fora plus an optional day of training workshops.

Industries that hold high-risk rates in relation to danger from fire, explosive atmospheres and exothermic reactions etc need to comply with DSEAR/ATEX regulations.
The Offshore Sector requires equipment that is capable of operating in a potentially hazardous environment. For electrical equipment this is largely covered under existing equipment certification for Zone 1 and Zone 2 equipment. However there are applications, such as the use of internal combustion engines, that are not covered, and there is no clear solution to these types of application.
The following areas will be addressed:
HSE overview of the requirements of the Offshore Regulations
Certifying authority – offshore safety case
Industry expert – introduction to DSEAR/ATEX
Consultant – definition of explosive atmospheres
Manufacturer – ATEX implications for rotating equipment
Design contractor – the importance of area classification and the requirement of DSEAR
Manufacturer – offshore explosion protection systems
Manufacturer – implementation of ATEX on mechanical equipment
Consultant – ATEX/DSEAR assessment – difficulties with compliance
Case studies from operators and suppliers on their experience with ATEX
25 November 2010 | 08:00 - 18:00
Many offshore pipelines in the North Sea are over 30 years old and may be required to operate well into the 21st Century as the North Sea continues to supply oil and gas. It is essential that the pipeline infrastructure is maintained in order to meet these future energy demands. Accordingly, engineers need to be aware of the latest developments in pipeline inspection, maintenance and analysis.
The North Sea is also presenting new challenges:
1. fluctuating energy prices have led to pipeline decommissioning and recommissioning projects; and,
2. an increased awareness of global warming effects and CO2 emissions has led to an interest converting depleted gas fields for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
All these challenges mean that maintaining pipeline integrity is a key consideration for the future of the North Sea.
This seminar will cover:
An overview of the past 30 years of North Sea pipelines.
The regulators position (HSE will give their position on key integrity and regulatory issues)
Latest inspection technology: intelligent pigging; subsea survey; acoustic survey; etc.
Life extension for aging pipelines, including re-certification and design appraisal.
Re-commissioning.
Future potential uses, including carbon capture and storage of depleted gas fields.
Security of supply, damaged pipelines and emergency readiness.
Risk assessment.
