Innovation Event
13th March 2008, Liberty Stadium, Swansea

On Thursday March 13th, 2008, we hosted the first Innovation Event to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week. 4 competitors; Gemma Whatling, Barry Lovern, Christian Griffiths and Paul O'Connell battled for the Winner-takes-all prize of £500. The 4 judges, David Brett (Airbus), Ian Weslake-Hill (IMechE South Wales Chairman), Matthew Jones (Corus) and Richard Sibbick (Dow Corning), all chartered mechanical engineers, had the harrowing challenge of selecting a winner from the 4 intriguing and inspiring presentations. After thorough discussion and consideration, Christian Griffiths was crowned with victory for his presentation on Micro Injection Moulding: An Investigation into Process Factors.

Well done to all competitors. These high quality innovations reinforce the fact, that ENGINEERING is a DIVERSE AND FASCINATING profession.

New Year Dinner
25th January 2008.  Armless Dragon, Cardiff

This is one of the two tables from the remarkably successful New Year Dinner in the Armless Dragon, Cardiff. The committee linked up with other institutes in the South Wales region. Invitees included Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Make Your Mark, an organisation for entrepreneurs, IMechE Western region YMP and IMechE Regional Staff. 18 committee members from different professional institutions were present which built a web of contacts, strengthened bonds with other institutions and launched ideas to an unknown audience as well as having a laugh. It is hoped that future YM events will be as successful and on a larger scale.
