Young Members Visit and Lecture -
Bloodhound SSC at Farnborough College of Technology
In Thameswey there are a variety of industries from large multi-nationals to small research units, many of whom have close contacts with the universities in the Region including the Joint Services Command and Staff College. The IMechE has close links with Surrey University and Oxford Brookes University which both offer accredited Mechanical Engineering degree courses.
Our main objective within the region is to offer an interesting and varied programme of events that will be of interest to members. Some of these have wide appeal and others are intended to meet a more specialist need. Events are organised by Areas and the Young Members and they are always keen to receive suggestions for future events.
The Region also sees it as a priority to encourage and support mechanical engineers, whether they are currently members or not, to become registered with EC-UK as Chartered, Incorporated or Technician Engineers. We have members who are active in the membership process and they are able to offer guidance and assistance to those considering this step. This can be provided on an individual basis, particularly where someone has no colleagues who are registered, or where there are a number of potential applicants in a company, our Business Development Manager may be able to provide assistance on site.
The IMechE President for 2009/10 is Keith Millard who lives in the Thameswey Region. He made a formal visit to the Region as President Elect visiting Siemens Magnet Technology Ltd in Eynsham and Oxford Brookes University in April 2009. There will also be a series of events focusing on sustainability in communities at Woking on 17 November 2009, a theme that the President is supporting. This will include an open meeting at the HG Wells centre in the evening which will be similar in style to the very successful “Great Debates” that our Reading Area has organised.
The Region is always looking to evolve and improve the things that we do. We would welcome feedback and suggestions from members on how we might develop in the future. There is always a welcome for volunteers who would like to help in our activities or in the work of the Institution more generally. Please contact the Chairman or the Administration Officer if you would like to comment or are interested in becoming more involved or just need advice.
